Tips for Maintaining Routines During School Holidays

SCHOOL’S OUT! Time for sun, sand… and just a little bit of structure?

The end of the school year brings a welcome sigh of relief, no more early morning chaos, packed lunches, or school runs. For many families, it’s a chance to unwind, travel, and enjoy a slower pace of life. But for others, the long summer break can bring a touch of panic. How do you keep your kids entertained for weeks on end? Without school to anchor the day, routines can quickly unravel. Bedtimes drift later, hygiene slips, and screens seem to take over every waking hour.

Phuket’s laid-back beach lifestyle makes it easy to forget the clock altogether, but kids thrive on predictability. Even during the holidays, having a flexible but familiar routine gives children a sense of control and comfort and helps avoid those late-afternoon meltdowns. A bit of planning can go a long way toward making your summer more relaxed, more fun, and more harmonious for everyone.

Build Your Summer Flow

Start with a family meeting at the beginning of the break and come up with your own “Phuket Summer Bucket List.” Get the kids involved by asking what they’d love to do, maybe it’s visiting a waterfall, having a beach BBQ, taking a Muay Thai class, or trying paddle boarding. Giving them input helps build excitement and provides structure to look forward to. Even spontaneous families can benefit from sketching out what the weeks might look like.

You don’t need to schedule every hour, but keeping a steady rhythm in the mornings and evenings can be really helpful, especially for younger kids. Let them sleep in, but still aim for consistent wake-up and wind-down times. Try to stick to familiar routines for teeth brushing, meals, screen time, reading, and bedtime. You might find it helpful to create a visual daily schedule, especially for younger children. Make it fun, add drawings of toothbrushes, storybooks, outdoor play, and even chore time.

If your child is a visual learner, consider crafting a colourful summer wall chart together. You could include themed days like:

Messy Mondays for painting with your fingers or digging in the garden.
Taco Tuesdays where your little chefs help you prepare dinner — maybe a Thai twist with fun toppings.
Water Wednesdays could mean beach day, pool splash time, or just a hose and some buckets in the backyard.
Thinking Thursdays might be for puzzles, storytelling, or learning new fun facts about marine life.
Fun Fridays could include a family bike ride to the market or a visit to the aquarium.

Routines That Strengthen Bonds

The summer break is also a chance to deepen connections through simple daily rituals. Bedtime stories are a gentle way to help kids wind down and give you time to check in emotionally. It’s a lovely way to end the day together, even if it’s just ten minutes snuggled up with a favourite book.

Dinner can be another opportunity to create family magic. Have a picnic dinner on the beach at sunset or let the kids build a “restaurant” in their bedroom. Even the smallest details, like letting them serve dessert or decorate the table, can make memories that stick. While routines are helpful, there’s also joy in the little breaks. Let the kids stay up late occasionally to count stars, hunt for crabs on the beach, or watch a movie under the fan.

Do your best to keep a fairly regular bedtime. Even without school the next day, children still need rest to recharge, and you’ll need your quiet time too! A slow bedtime routine can be a great time to ask about the highlights of their day, what they’re enjoying most about the holidays, or what they’re looking forward to next.

Don’t Forget the Grown-Ups

Let’s be honest: summer can also feel like a full-time job for parents. So don’t forget to schedule in a bit of your own downtime too. Whether it’s grabbing a coffee with a friend, taking a yoga class, or sitting quietly on the porch before the kids wake up, carving out a few minutes for yourself each day makes a big difference. You deserve a holiday too, even if you’re not hopping on a plane.

Give yourselves a gentle transition from the intensity of school life to holiday mode. The kids don’t need to be entertained every second, and you don’t need to feel guilty about quiet days at home. Take things slow. Take them outside. Take a deep breath. Whether you’re planning big island adventures or simply finding joy in routine moments, the goal is to find balance.

Here’s to a happy, healthy, and beautifully unhurried summer in Phuket.
