Tips on Getting Children Involved in Cooking

Whether it’s a laid-back Sunday brunch in your beachside villa or a rainy afternoon indoors, getting your kids into the kitchen can be one of the most rewarding things you do as a parent. While it might take a little more time (and patience), the payoff is huge: shared moments, new skills, and a growing love for real food.

In Phuket, where fresh tropical fruits, seafood, and herbs are part of daily life, there’s no better time to turn cooking into a fun family experience.

Choose the Right Time

Timing is everything. Don’t try to bring the kids into the kitchen during your weekday dinner rush. Instead, pick a relaxed moment like weekend breakfast, or even a quiet evening when there’s no rush. Let cooking be slow and joyful, not rushed and stressful.

Island Tip: Try Saturday morning smoothie bowls with mango, banana, and dragonfruit, perfect for little hands to help with peeling and decorating!

Get Everyone Involved

Younger kids don’t need to be on the sidelines. Even toddlers can help wash veggies, rip herbs, or sprinkle toppings. Older kids can do more hands-on tasks like:

  • Cracking eggs
  • Measuring ingredients
  • Peeling fruits
  • Using child-safe knives to cut soft foods
  • Stirring pancake mix or salad dressings

Bonus: It’s a stealthy way to practice motor skills, maths, and even a little science.

Teach Nutrition Naturally

Use cooking time as a chance to explore what’s in their food. Talk about:

  • Why do we use garlic or turmeric (hello, natural antibiotics!)
  • What calcium in yoghurt does for their bones
  • Why colourful veggies are “rainbow power foods”

Island Tip: Visit a local Phuket market like Naka or Chillva before cooking; kids can help choose produce and learn where their food comes from.

Expand Their Palate

Kids are far more likely to try new foods if they’ve helped prepare them. Cooking opens the door to exploring new flavours like:

  • Pad Thai with tamarind
  • Sweetcorn fritters
  • Thai basil stir-fry
  • Fresh spring rolls with dipping sauce

Let them smell herbs like lemongrass or kaffir lime leaves it might spark curiosity!

Let Aspiring Chefs Take the Lead

Got a tween who’s obsessed with cooking shows? Challenge them to cook a full meal on their own (with guidance, of course). Let them:

  • Choose the recipe
  • Write the shopping list
  • Help shop and prep
  • Plate and serve the meal!

Not only does it teach planning, budgeting, and time management, but it also builds confidence and pride.

Prioritise Safety, Always

The kitchen is fun, but it’s also full of hazards. Start by teaching key safety rules:

  • Always wash your hands before and after cooking
  • Use short sleeves and tie up your long hair
  • Keep pot handles turned inward
  • Use oven mittens for anything hot
  • Supervise all knife or stove use until your child is ready

Involve kids in why these rules matter, they’ll remember better when they understand the “why.”

Build Confidence & Create Memories

Cooking with your kids isn’t just about nutrition or life skills; it’s about connection. Whether the pancakes are perfect or burnt, they’ll remember the laughs, the mess, and the feeling of contributing.

Over time, they’ll move from “kitchen helper” to “head chef” and maybe even surprise you with a homemade breakfast in bed (fingers crossed!).
