Staying Healthy in Thailand’s Rainy Season

Phuket’s rainy season runs from May to October, bringing lush green landscapes, cooler temperatures, and plenty of indoor family time. But with the heavy downpours also comes an increased risk of coughs, colds, mosquito-borne illnesses, and other infections that thrive in warm, damp conditions. For parents, keeping kids healthy through these months can feel like a full-time job.

Here’s what you need to know about rainy season health risks in Phuket and practical steps you can take to keep your family well.

Why Coughs, Colds & Flu Spread More in the Rainy Season

During the wet months, everything stays damp, creating the perfect environment for viruses to spread. Kids are more likely to share germs indoors at schools and play areas, and we all tend to touch our faces after wiping off rain, transferring bacteria in the process.

Flu season also peaks during these months. Less sunshine means lower vitamin D levels, which weakens the immune system. Combine that with Phuket’s high humidity and constant air-conditioning, and it’s no surprise kids are more prone to coughs, colds, and fevers.

Bad Bacteria: Leptospirosis

One rainy-season infection parents should be aware of is Leptospirosis. It’s caused by bacteria found in water contaminated with rat urine and can enter the body through small cuts, eyes, or the mouth. Symptoms include fever, headaches, and body aches, and it needs medical treatment.

Children are especially at risk if they play in puddles or on flooded streets. The best prevention is to avoid direct contact with dirty water, change out of wet clothes quickly, and always wash hands, feet, and face after being outside.

What You Can Do to Keep Your Family Healthy

  1. Rain-Ready Gear

Invest in raincoats, waterproof shoes, and umbrellas for the school run or outings. Staying dry is the first line of defence against seasonal bugs.

  1. Avoid Puddles & Flooded Areas

While kids love splashing, stagnant water in Phuket often contains bacteria, sewage, or mosquito larvae. It’s best to keep little feet out of puddles and stick to dry pathways.

  1. Watch Out for Mosquitoes

The rainy season is also peak mosquito season. Dengue fever, chikungunya, and other mosquito-borne diseases are common in southern Thailand. Prevent mosquito breeding around the house by clearing standing water from pots, buckets, or drains, and use kid-safe repellent when outdoors — especially near lakes, marshes, or the mangroves.

  1. Stay on Top of Vaccinations

Flu shots are strongly recommended during the wet season. Other vaccinations worth discussing with your paediatrician include Japanese Encephalitis, Typhoid, and Hepatitis A. Some private hospitals in Phuket (like Bangkok Hospital Siriroj, Dibuk Hospital, and Mission Hospital) also offer the Dengue vaccine for eligible children.

  1. Make the Most of Sunshine

When the skies clear, take the kids outdoors! Phuket has plenty of parks, beaches, and open-air spaces where children can run, play, and soak up some vitamin D. A little sunshine helps balance out all those rainy days and strengthens immunity.

The rainy season in Phuket doesn’t have to mean endless colds and sniffles. With the right precautions from mosquito protection to smart hygiene habits, your family can enjoy the beauty of the green season while staying healthy and active. A little preparation goes a long way in keeping coughs, bugs, and infections at bay.
