Tips for Maintaining Routines During School Holidays

School’s out, finally! Time to relax, right?

With the school year behind us, families in Phuket are breathing a sigh of relief, no early wake-ups, no school runs, no homework. While some of us are ready for sun-soaked adventures and slow mornings, others may be wondering, How on earth am I going to keep my kids entertained all summer?

Without the structure of school, it’s easy for family routines to go out the window. Late nights, skipped showers, and endless screen time can sneak in before you know it. But don’t worry, with a little planning, summer can be fun and functional.

Why Routines Matter Even on Island Time

While Phuket might feel like the perfect place to “let it all go,” routines are incredibly reassuring for children. Knowing what’s coming next helps them feel secure and balanced, even when life feels more relaxed. Plus, routines help avoid those cranky meltdowns and “I’m bored!” complaints, especially after a long beach day.

Simple Ways to Keep a Sense of Structure:

Start with a Summer Bucket List

Sit down together and create a family “Summer Bucket List.” Let your kids share what they’re excited about, whether it’s going to a day camp, visiting a water park like Blue Tree Phuket, or just trying a new smoothie at the local market. It gives them a voice and something to look forward to. It also helps you create a loose timeline for fun and chill days.

Stick to Morning & Evening Routines

While sleeping in is part of the holiday joy, keeping consistent times for brushing teeth, meals, reading, and bedtime helps kids stay grounded. If your child thrives on structure, consider using a whiteboard checklist or visual schedule (with pictures!) to keep track of daily tasks.

Make it Fun with Weekly Themes

Give each weekday a playful twist to create a rhythm to the week. Try:

Messy Monday – Finger-painting or beach sand sculptures.

Taco Tuesday – Let the kids create fun menus or cook with you.

Wet Wednesday – Pool time, beach play, or even a hose and bucket in the backyard!

Thoughtful Thursday – Write postcards, make gratitude jars, or do a small act of kindness.

Fun Friday – Head to a new park, go to the aquarium, or try mini golf at Dino Park.

Routines Build Connection

Bedtime stories don’t need to disappear just because school’s out. Reading together remains a special way to wind down and check in.
Dinner time can also be an adventure. Why not set up a picnic in the garden, eat dinner in a fort built with blankets, or let the kids choose a new spot each night?
And yes, it’s okay to break bedtime rules once in a while, watching the stars together in your backyard or balcony is a summer memory worth making.

Pace Yourself, Parents!

Remember: you don’t need to be an entertainment director every second of the day. Give your family some downtime to adjust from school life to holiday mode. Whether you’re relaxing at home, exploring Old Town, or heading out for a beach day, make space in your own routine to rest, reflect, or meet up with friends, without the kids.

Phuket’s summer offers the perfect backdrop to find that sweet spot between play and pause. With a little structure, a lot of love, and plenty of sunscreen, your family can enjoy a fun, peaceful, and connected holiday season.
