Learning Difficulties

Every parent keeps a watchful eye on their child’s growth from the first words to school milestones. But sometimes questions creep in: Why is my child struggling with reading? Why do they find it hard to join in with friends? Why does homework end in frustration? These worries are common, and while every child learns at their own pace, there are moments when parents wonder if something deeper might be going on.

Here in Phuket, more families are beginning to seek support for children who may have learning differences or need extra help in school. The good news? Resources and specialists are available to guide you through assessments, provide strategies, and build the right environment for your child to thrive. Recognising potential learning difficulties early on can make a huge difference not only in academic progress but also in a child’s confidence and overall happiness.

Spot the Signs

It’s vital to resist the temptation to compare your child to others, despite what some overly enthusiastic parents might suggest. Your friend’s kid might be a musical prodigy at age 5, but your own child might unveil their exceptional talents later in life. Even in moments of frustration, remember the golden rule: no two children are ever the same.

In collaboration with learning support specialists here in Phuket, we’ve put together a list of signs to watch out for. These could indicate that your child is wrestling with an undiagnosed disorder or simply needs a little extra help in school. Don’t fret; help is within reach, and all you need to do is find the right support and learning style to help your child reach their full potential and—most importantly—enjoy their learning journey.

  • Your child might easily get frustrated when trying to complete a task or exhibit outbursts if they can’t finish it.
  • Reading, writing, and math skills may progress unusually slowly, or your child might make little headway in these areas.
  • Motor skills, memory, and coordination could pose problems for your child.
  • They might have slow speech or language difficulties.
  • Socialising with other children may be challenging, and they might resort to misbehaviour to gain attention.

Common Disorders Explained

Dyslexia

A language-based disorder that makes it difficult to read, interpret words, and understand letters. It can also impact writing, spelling, and sometimes even speech.

Dyscalculia

A mathematical disability that hinders the ability to make sense of numbers and math concepts.

Dysgraphia

A condition that causes issues with written expression. Many children with dysgraphia find handwriting, spelling, and organising thoughts on paper especially difficult.

Auditory Processing Disorder (APD)

A sensory disability where a person struggles to understand or process language, despite having normal hearing. Instructions can seem confusing, especially in noisy environments.

Visual Processing Disorder (VPD)

Not an eyesight issue, but rather how the brain interprets visual information. Kids may struggle to make sense of what they see, even if their vision is fine.

Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)

Characterised by inattention, hyperactivity, and impulsive behaviour. It’s the most commonly diagnosed disorder in children and is not caused by poor parenting or laziness.

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD)

A developmental disability that affects communication and social interaction. Symptoms and abilities vary widely, but with the right support, children can thrive.

Assessments & Learning Support in Phuket

If you’re considering having your child assessed, it’s best to schedule an appointment with a diagnostic specialist who can guide you through the official assessment process. You might also want to reach out to your child’s school to check if they have a learning support team on staff. Alternatively, you can contact an independent specialist to carry out the tests.

Here in Phuket, there are a few places parents often turn to for help:

  • Phuket International Hospital & Bangkok Hospital Phuket – offer pediatric assessments and referrals to developmental specialists.
  • HeadStart International School – provides student support services, including learning support for children with mild to moderate difficulties.
  • British International School Phuket (BISP) has a dedicated Learning Support Department with specialised staff.
  • KIS Phuket – integrates additional learning support into its international curriculum.
  • Private therapists & centres – such as speech and occupational therapists in Phuket Town and Cherngtalay.

Not every child facing learning difficulties needs to move to an inclusive school. Some may simply require additional assistance or guidance to better navigate a mainstream curriculum. However, if your child’s challenges begin to impact their self-esteem or classroom behaviour, it may be time to explore extra support tailored to their needs.

In today’s educational landscape, Phuket schools are becoming increasingly aware of inclusivity. Supporting children with different learning styles not only benefits those facing challenges but also enriches the classroom experience for everyone, helping to create a more compassionate and welcoming environment.
