As international schools across Phuket wrap up for the term, summer camp season is officially around the corner! Check out our Summer Camps guide here. Whether your child is off to an overnight nature retreat or a week-long adventure with friends, it’s time to start thinking about what they’ll need for their time away from home.
If you’ve already got your bags packed and by the door great! If not, don’t worry. We’ve put together some helpful packing tips so your child can head off feeling confident, prepared, and ready for some unforgettable experiences.
Start with the basics: if the camp has sent through a packing list, print it out and tick things off as you go. This helps make sure nothing gets forgotten in the last-minute rush.
Encourage your child to help with the packing. This way, they’ll know where everything is, and it gives them a sense of ownership over their belongings and their time at camp.
Keep luggage manageable. If your child can’t carry their own bag, it might be time to take a few things out. Being able to lift and move their own gear fosters independence, and that’s a big part of the camp experience.
Packing cubes are a great way to keep things organised. They’re especially helpful for separating clean clothes from laundry and keeping smaller items easy to find.
Avoid sending brand-new shoes. Camps in and around Phuket often involve outdoor activities like hiking, games, and exploring nature. Well-worn trainers that fit properly are a much safer (and more comfortable) choice.
Pack a pair of flip flops or sandals. Easy to slip on, they’re ideal for downtime around camp and perfect for navigating sandy or muddy areas without fuss.
Don’t worry about fashion. Clothes are bound to get dirty and sometimes lost so stick with simple, practical items like old T-shirts, breathable shorts, and swimwear.
Keep toiletries in a separate bag, ideally waterproof. Put the toothbrush and toothpaste in a ziplock bag for extra protection. Limited bathroom space means it’s better if kids can easily carry their toiletries to and from their bunk.
Leave digital devices at home. Camps are a great opportunity to unplug and connect with nature and new friends. Let your child experience the joy of being tech-free—no screens, just sunshine, stories, and songs around the campfire.
If it’s their first time away, tuck a couple of encouraging notes into their bag. A quick “We love you” or “Have a blast!” written on a post-it can bring big comfort during homesick moments.

Camp Must-Haves
Don’t forget the essentials: sunscreen, insect repellent, and a refillable water bottle. These basics go a long way in keeping your camper healthy, hydrated, and happy in Phuket’s tropical climate.
And our top tip? Smile, relax, and be open to something new because that’s what summer camp is all about!
