When we take our children on holiday here in Phuket, are we doing it to build real memories, or just to get the perfect photo for Instagram? Are we exploring beaches, waterfalls, and temples to truly connect with them, or are we quietly curating a feed that tells everyone else how much fun we’re supposed to be having?
It’s a question worth asking as the summer holidays begin and the island fills with families eager for adventure.
In today’s hyperconnected world, it’s easy to plan every detail of a trip in advance, from scrolling hotel reviews in Patong to checking Google Street View of your next lunch spot in Rawai. But somewhere in all the convenience, have we lost a little of the spontaneity and wonder? More importantly, are our kids growing up seeing the world through the lens of a camera instead of their own eyes?
Where Is the Experience?
Recently, I had the chance to visit a local elephant sanctuary here in Thailand, a real haven for retired elephants that once worked in logging and tourism. These majestic animals now spend their days wading into rivers, munching on watermelons, and receiving gentle scrub-downs from their mahouts. There were even baby elephants, cheeky, clumsy, full of energy, knocking into everything and everyone with joyful abandon.
I stayed for hours. Feeding them. Watching. Listening. Laughing. I took a few photos, yes, but most of my time was spent being there fully. I can still feel the texture of their skin, the joy of scratching behind an ear, the weight of a trunk leaning into my palm.
But over those few hours, I saw more than 20 tourists come and go. Most stayed less than 10 minutes. They took dozens of selfies, some never even looking up from their screens. Then they were gone. I couldn’t help but wonder if they experienced anything real, or if the entire visit was about proving they were there?
We all want to document our family adventures, the beach days, jungle treks, and island hops but have we started valuing the photo more than the moment?
The Social Dilemma
We’re raising kids in an era where social media is part of the air they breathe. In Phuket, whether at Nai Harn Beach, Old Town murals, or Big Buddha, it’s common to see parents snapping away nonstop while kids pose again and again, learning to smile for the camera rather than smile for the memory.
And yet… shouldn’t childhood be more than a series of photo ops?
I don’t have a perfect answer. But I know what I want for my daughters. I want them to splash in the waves just to feel the water. To climb rocks just to see what’s at the top. To get messy. To make friends. To have moments that live in their hearts, not just in their camera roll. I want them to be in the experience, not just documenting it.
Time to Reconnect
Maybe it’s time to reconsider how we engage with our kids. Next time we’re at the beach, the park, or even just out for ice cream on a steamy Phuket afternoon, maybe we’ll put the phone away for a while. Maybe we try to soak up the moment without thinking about hashtags or angles. Maybe we teach them, by example, that not everything needs to be shared.
As someone who loves adventures, I understand the pull of wanting to share beautiful moments. I’m no stranger to uploading beach pics or sunset shots. But I try not to take photos for social media. I take them to remember how I felt in that moment, and I hope that’s what my children take from me.
Let’s teach our kids that life isn’t about crafting the perfect photo; it’s about crafting real, rich, messy, imperfect experiences.
So this summer, whether you’re watching the sun rise over Promthep Cape, splashing in the shallows of Kata Beach, or feeding elephants in the lush hills of Phang Nga, maybe we all take just one less photo, and spend one more moment fully present.
