International Mother’s Day

There’s another Mother’s Day just around the corner and honestly, we’re all for celebrating it as many times as possible. Mums, moms, and mothers really do make the world go round, and this is the perfect excuse to show a little extra appreciation.

Whether the mum you’re celebrating is still deep in the toddler years, managing school runs, juggling work, or doing all of the above at once she deserves a proper break. And the good news? There are plenty of simple, meaningful ways to make her feel special right here in Phuket.

Why Is Mother’s Day Celebrated at Different Times?

Mother’s Day isn’t celebrated on the same date everywhere, which can be a little confusing.

In countries like Australia, Canada, and the US, it falls on the second Sunday in May often referred to as “International Mother’s Day.” In Thailand, however, Mother’s Day (“Wan Mae”) is celebrated on 12 August, which is also the birthday of Queen Sirikit. Meanwhile, in the UK and Ireland, it takes place earlier in the year during Lent, meaning the date changes annually.

Different dates, same meaning a day to say thank you and show love.

Let Mum Rest

After asking plenty of mums what they actually want, the answer is surprisingly simple: sleep.

An extra hour in bed, a slow morning, or even a full day to relax uninterrupted can go a long way. It might not sound extravagant, but it’s often the most appreciated gift of all.

Homemade Gifts That Matter

Some of the most treasured Mother’s Day gifts aren’t bought they’re made.

Kids love getting creative, and handmade cards, drawings, and crafts often become keepsakes that mums hold onto for years. Set up a simple craft station at home with coloured paper, glue, stickers, and photos, and let the kids take the lead.

From handprint cards to paper flowers or decorated photo frames, it’s the thought and effort that counts. You could even turn the day into a mini “home spa,” with kids helping paint nails or give a gentle head massage simple, fun, and surprisingly effective.

Take Over The Kitchen

One of the best ways to treat mum is by taking charge of the kitchen for the day.

Breakfast in bed is always a winner, but you could also plan a full family meal. Older kids can help prepare simple dishes, while younger ones can design a menu card or decorate the table.

Even something as simple as her favourite takeaway can feel special with a bit of effort think candles, flowers, or little handmade decorations. It’s all about creating a moment she doesn’t have to organise herself.

Chocolate Always Works

You really can’t go wrong with chocolate.

Whether it’s a beautifully packaged box or something homemade, it’s an easy way to bring a smile. Older kids can try baking brownies or simple chocolate treats, while younger ones can help decorate cupcakes or pancakes.

If you want to add a small life lesson, kids can even earn a bit of pocket money by helping around the house and use it to buy their own gift it makes the gesture feel even more meaningful.

Don’t Forget The Flowers

Flowers and Mother’s Day go hand in hand.

From elegant bouquets to simple handmade posies, flowers are a classic way to show appreciation. If you want to make it more personal, let the kids help choose or arrange them.

In Phuket, you’ll find plenty of florists offering delivery options, or you can keep it simple and let the kids create their own little arrangements at home.

Making It Special in Phuket

Whether you’re planning a quiet day at home, a beachside brunch, or a family outing, Phuket offers plenty of ways to celebrate.

The most important thing isn’t how much you spend it’s making mum feel appreciated, supported, and loved. A bit of thought, a bit of effort, and a lot of heart go a long way.
