Bringing the Outdoors Inside During Rainy Season

The Phuket rainy season means plenty of grey skies, sudden downpours, and days when outdoor play just isn’t an option. While kids love puddle jumping, parents know that staying out in the rain too long can lead to coughs, colds, or even mosquito bites. But just because the weather keeps us indoors doesn’t mean kids have to miss out on outdoor-inspired learning and play.

Across many international schools in Phuket, outdoor education is seen as key to child development. But when the monsoon arrives, the good news is you can still bring nature inside. These fun rainy day activities for kids in Phuket are creative, hands-on, and sneak in a little learning all while keeping everyone dry.

Observation Charts

Even if kids can’t be outside, they can still explore what’s happening just beyond the window. Observation charts are a simple way to get children noticing daily changes in weather, animals, or even passing airplanes.

Create a large chart with categories like sun, clouds, wind, rain, thunder, and lightning. Throughout the day, encourage kids to check outside and mark what they see with stickers, stamps, or drawings.

Handy Hint: Keep binoculars near the window so children can lead the activity. They’ll love spotting birds, butterflies, or even a passing gecko.

Stick, Flower & Leaf Art

Phuket’s rains bring down fallen leaves, twigs, and tropical flowers perfect for turning into artwork. On drier mornings, head outside to collect interesting bits of nature (but avoid unknown berries or plants if your child has allergies).

Use the materials to create leaf mosaics, stick-built roads for toy cars, or even flower paintbrushes for nature-inspired art. Dried leaves also make beautiful mobiles to hang in kids’ rooms.

Design Your Own Garden

Got a stack of old magazines? This activity lets kids design their dream garden indoors.

Spread out a large board or paper, give them glue, scissors, and let them cut out garden-themed images. They can create a fairy garden, a jungle adventure, or even a monster truck park. The only rule is to use their imagination.

Don’t worry if the final product doesn’t look like a “real” garden. The goal is exploration and creativity, not perfection.

Grow Your Own Garden

Nothing excites kids more than watching something grow day by day. Start with easy plants like cress, mung beans, or even basil (which grows beautifully in Phuket’s climate).

Kids can water their plants, rotate them toward the sunlight, and track their growth in a journal. Growing cress heads in eggshells is especially fun, and once it’s ready, they can trim the “hair” and add it to egg sandwiches or salads.

Rainy days in Phuket don’t have to mean boredom or endless screen time. By bringing the outdoors inside, kids can stay curious, creative, and connected to nature even when the monsoon is pouring down.
