Back To School Top Tips

It’s that time again when the endless days of Phuket sunshine and holiday fun start winding down, and backpacks, lunchboxes, and early mornings return. Whether your child is heading back to their familiar classroom in Rawai or starting fresh at a new international school in Kathu, the mix of excitement and nerves is real.

For some kids, the thought of new teachers, routines, and classmates feels thrilling. For others, it’s a little daunting. This is the moment to tune in to their emotions, reassure them, and focus on all the positives that a new school term brings.

Focus on the Positives

Talk about the good stuff: seeing old friends, making new ones, joining after-school clubs, and getting fresh stationery (let’s face it, kids love new pencils and notebooks!).

If your child is feeling anxious, teach simple tools like deep breathing, positive self-talk, and using affirmation cards. You can print free sets from sites like Kids Happy, or even make your own together using shells or small stones collected from Kata or Nai Harn Beach as “affirmation tokens.”

Remember, kids mirror our emotions. If they see you calm, positive, and confident about the school year, they’re more likely to feel the same.

Get Back to a Good Sleep Routine

Phuket’s late sunsets and easy holiday pace can throw sleep schedules way off. A week before school starts, bring bedtime forward bit by bit so your child is getting 10–12 hours of sleep.

Tired kids struggle to concentrate, so think of sleep as part of their learning toolkit. Create a wind-down routine that works for your home, whether it’s a bedtime story, herbal tea, or listening to the waves on a sound app (or the real ones if you live near the beach!).

Start the Day with a Good Breakfast

Kids who eat a healthy breakfast tend to be more alert and focused. Stock your fridge with quick, nutritious options, overnight oats with tropical fruit, wholegrain toast with avocado, or eggs and fresh juice from your local market.

If mornings are rushed, prep the night before. Even a banana and yoghurt eaten in the car on the way to school is better than nothing.

Get Organised (Your Future Self Will Thank You)

Phuket mornings can be hectic, especially if you’re battling traffic to make the school drop-off before the Patong road jams up.

Lay out uniforms, shoes, water bottles, hats, and homework the night before. Keep a school “launch pad” by the door where everything is ready to grab. For younger kids, use picture-based checklists; for older ones, encourage them to take charge themselves.

It’s tempting to swoop in when they forget something, but sometimes it’s okay to let them experience the natural consequence, which builds independence.

Keep a Visible Calendar

Between sports days at BISP, Thai holidays, after-school swimming lessons, and birthday parties, it’s easy to lose track. Use a wall calendar in the kitchen or a magnetic one on the fridge so the whole family can see what’s coming up.

For older kids, print and laminate their timetable so they can keep it in their bedroom or school bag. This helps them learn proactive planning instead of last-minute scrambling.

Back-to-school season in Phuket is a fresh start for both kids and parents. With a little preparation, a positive mindset, and some solid routines, you can ease your child’s transition and set them up for a confident, happy school year.

Here’s to calmer mornings, organised school bags, and kids who (mostly) remember their hats.
