A Fulfilling Boarding Experience at BISP

For many students, boarding at the British International School, Phuket (BISP) is more than just living away from home. It’s joining a caring community that feels like family. Nestled on a beautiful 44-acre campus surrounded by tropical landscapes, BISP offers boarders a place where learning, friendships and personal growth come together.

“We’re one of only two boarding schools on the island,” says Magali Margo, Head of Boarding at BISP. “Our environment offers students a peaceful and inspiring setting to focus on their academics, sports, arts, and personal development.”

With over 1,140 students and a thriving international community, boarding at BISP brings together young people from around the world. The four boarding houses provide structure, warmth and care, guided by dedicated House Parents who support each student 24/7.

A Day in Boarding Life

From team games and beach afternoons to creative projects and community-based activities, boarding life at BISP is full of variety. Students enjoy a balanced lifestyle that encourages both independence and connection.

“Every weekend, we plan activities that build confidence, teamwork and friendship,” Magali explains. “It’s a space where students can relax, have fun and learn important life skills at the same time.”

Balancing Sports and Study

For many boarders, including high-performance athletes, living on campus offers the ideal balance between training and academics. With four high-performance sports academies in Football, Tennis, Golf and Swimming and a team of over 110 teachers and coaches, BISP ensures students are supported in every aspect of their development.

Academically, BISP provides a continuous, world-class education from Early Years through to Secondary School, following a British-style curriculum. Students begin in the Early Years Foundation Stage and Primary School, then continue into Lower Secondary (Years 7–9), where they build strong foundations across core subjects before moving on to IGCSEs in Years 10 and 11, and finally to either the IB Diploma or BTEC Programme in Years 12 and 13. This structure allows every student to follow the pathway that best supports their interests, goals and learning style.House Parents and coaches work closely to help student-athletes manage their schedules, rest and recovery. Teachers provide flexibility around tournaments or travel, helping students stay on top of their studies while pursuing their sporting goals.

Siera’s Story

For 13-year-old Siera Ueda from Japan, boarding at BISP has been a life-changing experience.

“I came to BISP two years ago with a football scholarship,” she says. “At first, it was hard being away from my family, but now I think it’s been a good stepping stone for my personal growth and independence.”

Siera trains in both swimming and football as part of the BISP Cruzeiro Football Academy. “The best part about boarding is being surrounded by people who share the same interests,” she says. “Your friends really understand you, and the boarding parents are always there to support you.”

Living on campus means Siera can walk straight to training in the morning and balance her schoolwork with ease. “My teachers and coaches always help me manage my time, especially around tournaments. It really helps me improve both in school and in sport.”

A Home for Growth and Opportunity

At BISP, every boarder, from the youngest student to those preparing for university, benefits from a nurturing environment designed to help them succeed.

“Our goal is to ensure students feel happy, supported and confident,” says Magali. “Boarding at BISP is not just about academics or sports. It’s about helping young people grow into kind, resilient and independent individuals, ready for whatever comes next.”
