Children and Eating Disorders: What to Avoid and What to Get Right

Food plays a vital role in supporting a child’s growth, development and overall wellbeing. However, unhealthy eating habits or poor food choices can have long-term effects that extend into adulthood. Helping children build a positive relationship with food early on is key to setting them up for a healthier future.

Recognise Obesity as a Growing Concern

Childhood obesity is becoming an increasingly serious issue worldwide. Changes in lifestyle mean that many children now consume more sugary drinks, eat fewer home-cooked meals, sleep less and spend more time on screens instead of being physically active. These shifts can significantly impact both physical and mental health.

Many parents still encourage children to finish everything on their plate, sometimes even using pressure to do so. While well intentioned, this can teach children to ignore their natural hunger cues. A better approach is to offer a few healthy options and allow children to choose what they prefer. Involving children in preparing meals or even growing simple foods at home can also help build a more positive connection with what they eat.

Watch For Signs of Eating Disorders

Eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia and binge eating tend to develop during the early teenage years and are often linked to emotional and psychological factors. These conditions can affect how a child views food and their own body, sometimes leading to harmful behaviours.

Children dealing with eating disorders may try to hide their habits. They might become more withdrawn, avoid eating with the family or act secretively around food. Warning signs can include unexplained weight loss, lack of normal growth, excessive exercise, unusual eating behaviours or food going missing at home.

If any of these signs appear, it is important to seek advice from a healthcare professional. Early support and intervention can make a significant difference, especially when families are involved in the process.

Encourage Healthy Eating Habits Early

A child’s eating habits begin forming much earlier than many parents realise. Even before birth, babies are exposed to flavours through their mother’s diet, and this continues during breastfeeding. As children grow, they learn by observing the people around them.

Parents play a major role as role models. Eating balanced meals, maintaining regular meal times and sitting down together as a family can all encourage healthier habits. Children are far more likely to adopt positive behaviours when they see them practised consistently at home.

Make Treats Occasional, Not Everyday

Treat foods like sweets, crisps and sugary desserts are fine in moderation, but they should not become everyday staples. Keeping these items out of the house reduces temptation and helps children develop a preference for more nutritious options.

Even the sight or smell of certain foods can trigger cravings and lead to overeating. By making these foods occasional treats rather than regular choices, it becomes easier to maintain a balanced diet without constant struggle.

The Bigger Picture

Improving a child’s eating habits does not happen overnight, but small, consistent changes can lead to lasting results. Focus on building healthy routines step by step and creating a supportive environment around food. Over time, these efforts can help children develop a positive relationship with eating and support their long-term health and wellbeing.
