Safety Tips for Songkran

As Songkran approaches, it’s time to gear up for the fun but also stay safe during the festivities. The holiday runs from April 12th to 16th, but the celebrations often extend for an entire week. While it’s the perfect time to embrace the water fights, it’s also crucial to be aware of safety. Last year, Songkran saw 400 deaths and over 1,000 injuries, largely due to road accidents.

One of the most important safety tips is to avoid drinking and driving. Alcohol is readily available during the festival, but impaired driving is a serious risk. The government is cracking down on drunk driving, so opting for transport such as Grab or Bolt is a safer choice to avoid being caught in a potentially dangerous situation.

Also, be mindful not to splash motorcycle drivers. Motorcycles are already a significant safety concern in Thailand, and splashing riders can be hazardous. It’s essential to respect others on the road, especially those on two wheels.

Instead of driving, it’s a good idea to take public transport. Major streets will be blocked, and traffic will be chaotic, so it’s best to leave your car behind and hop on public transport to avoid getting stuck in the gridlock.

Given the water fights everywhere, it’s advisable to leave your valuables at home. If you need to bring a phone or cash, store them in waterproof pouches, which can easily be found at most shops. Protecting your electronics and money from the water can save you a lot of hassle later on.

During Songkran, you might have powder rubbed on your face. While harmless, it can sting your eyes, so wearing goggles is a good way to stay comfortable while joining in on the fun.

For families with young kids, it’s best to avoid the busiest areas in Phuket, such as Patong Beach, which can be overwhelming. Instead, consider hosting your own Songkran party in a local park or garden, or at a quieter beach, where you can control the environment and ensure a safer, more relaxed experience for the little ones.

Also, be mindful not to throw ice or dirty water. This can cause harm and spoil the fun for others. Stick to clean, cool water to make the experience enjoyable for everyone involved.

Wearing sturdy shoes, such as sneakers or waterproof footwear with good grip, is also important. The streets will be slippery, and it’s easy to lose your footing if you’re wearing flip-flops.

Finally, consider escaping the busy areas of Phuket for a more peaceful and unique experience. While popular spots like Patong Beach are packed with tourists, heading to the quieter parts of the island, such as the villages in the northern or southern regions, offers a more tranquil celebration. You’ll also experience local traditions and cultural practices that provide a fascinating contrast to the typical Songkran festivities.

Most importantly, remember to have fun! Songkran is all about celebrating, so embrace the water, wear your smile, and stay safe while enjoying one of Thailand’s most exciting holidays.
